Mr Antoine de Bengy Puyvallée

Research: My research focuses on the global governance and politics of pandemic preparedness and response. I am particularly interested in new forms of public-private cooperation. My PhD project examines the emergence of the WHO’s Emergency Medical Teams initiative, which aims to coordinate and quality-assure NGOs, governmental, military and private for-profit response teams to respond to infectious disease outbreaks and humanitarian emergencies. Key in emergency management is to decide when to intervene and when to finish the mission. Drawing mainly on examples from the West Africa Ebola epidemic (2014-2015), I will reflect on how international humanitarian responses may affect how we understand ‘the end’ of an epidemic and its consequences on the ground.
